Problems Receiving
The file I received won't open.
Slingshot is simply a tool for transporting files from one computer to another.
At no point are files sent via Slingshot modified from their original copies
(just like transporting the file on a thumb drive or CD).
There are several common reasons that a file received via Slingshot may not
open on your computer:
- The file was created using an application not installed on your computer.
If the sender creates a
file using an application that you don't have installed on your computer, then you will not be able to open
the received file. You should contact the sender directly and ask them to either save the file into a common
format or contact I.T. to have the application in question installed on your machine.
- The file was created using a newer version of an application you already have.
Check with the
sender to make sure you're both using the same version of the application in question. If not, ask the
sender to re-send the file in a common or legacy format.
- The file was sent from a Mac and does not have a file extension.
Mac computers don't require the
file extension in the filename to identify a file (i.e. ".doc" for Word Documents), but Windows computers
do. If you know for sure what kind of file was sent, you can add this extension to the filename manually.
Otherwise, you should contact the original sender directly and ask them to re-send with the appropriate file
extension.
